Fisher Island is the most private community in Miami-Dade County, Florida, and one of the most exclusive communities in the world. It is set on a 216-acre barrier island of its own that is surrounded by the shimmering blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Established in 1919, the island went through a series of legal battles over its ownership and used to be a one-family island up until the 1980s.

How to get to Fisher Island, Miami?

Fisher Island is located to the South of Miami Beach and to the South-East of Miami. However, even though this is an ultra-private area with no bridges or roads connected to it, it is not a remote and secluded community that will put your hours away from civilization. Residents and their guests can easily get to an island on a ferry, helicopter or a private boat. The trip from Fisher Island to Miami Beach, for example, would only take 40 minutes. The area is constantly security-guarded and patrolled so it is much easier to get out than to get in.

Only the residents and their guests are allowed on the island. And yes, you can drive to it if you are one of them, as there are ferries going to and from the island.

Who lives on Fisher Island?

Home to many celebrities, in 2015 Fisher Island was a place with the highest per capita income in the United States. Considering that there are only 218 households on this island, this is quite an exclusive club. Over the years, the list Fisher Island residents included Oprah Winfrey, Boris BeckerMel Brooks, Pavel Bure, Andre Agassi, Caroline Wozniacki, and others.

What to do on Fisher Island?

Even though it is a relatively small community there is not only residential property on the island.  The University of Miami used to have a Comparative Sedimentology Laboratory on an island for almost 20 years. Fisher Island Day School is an elementary school that is located on the island and includes pre-kindergarten through 6th grade. Additionally, residents get to enjoy the benefits of the Fisher Island Club private beach club, a private yacht marina, a 22,000-square-foot spa, and wellness center, as well as a 9-hole golf course with a clubhouse, putting green and a driving range, and 18 tennis courts! Residents prefer to use golf carts to get around the island and to go to its various restaurants and shops. Since everything else in South Florida is so close to the island, its residents do not have to worry about not having other entertainment options within easy reach.
